"Fundamentalismos, comunicación y globalización: Desafíos pastorales" por Dennis A. Smith

We like and recommend these current essays:

--"Barry Creech reviews the declaration of human rights to make the case for communications rights from the USA perspective.

--" Models for Sustainable Open Educational Resources." The strength of this essay by Stephen Downs is that it describes the complex context that can make sustainability possible. It helps get away from the the constricted "income and profit" tunnel-vision

-- Pradip Thomas describes gospel dimension of Intellectual Property Rights.

-- "An Open Source Site for Religious Education Materials" by Dr. Mary Hess.

-- En que onda está Dios by Margarita Reyna Ruiz about religion on radio

-- (ok, not so current) “The Purpose of Copyright by Lydia Pallas Loren in the quarterly, Open Spaces

-- Essay by Rodrigo, about the benefits of open software in church communities.(In Spanish)

--This essay, "Francis Xavier and Asia: the road to cultural inventiveness," by Benoit Vermander, Director of the Ricci Institute, gives an interesting insight into the importance of inter-religious initiatives.

--New book by Dr. Mary Hess, “Engaging Technologies in Theological Education.” It explains, clearly and with great insight, why churches and centers of religious and theological educations need to attend to media culture.  It also gives examples of how to do it.

--This article by Carlos Romero Moragas, “Copyleft - Software libre: libertad de conocimiento, libertad de creación is an excellent and concise overview of the copyright issues, software and information rights issues.

--Cristo en el Cine by Mariano Silva, Chilean film critic, is an essay that gives a refreshing, insightful balance to film and depictions of Christ by placing Mel Gibson’s , the Lumiere brothers 1897 version, and many others, in historical context.  Among the interesting aspects, he cites that “Only two figures have appeared on screen more often than Christ: Sherlock Holmes and Dracula” and  polemics about how Chirst is depicted in film are nothing new.”

--Belief in Media: Cultural Perspectives on Media and Christianity, co-edited by Peter Horsfield, Mary Hess and Adán Medrano is available from MACC bookstore. It is an updated look at media and Christianity that offers theory and case examples. Suited for Seminaries and religious studies departments.

We think these Conferences are worth attending
Great news: Fifth International Conference on Media, Religion and Culture  is now accepting proposals.  This conference is an important summit and we think you should place it on your calendar as a “Must Attend.”

These Videos are not our own productions, but we think they make great viewing

-- A great music video by "Los Padrinos." Titled "No Todo Es Malo," it has a strong Tex-Mex feel and intentionally underscores the melding of religion in popular culture.

--This rap video circulated on the Internet following the Katrina disaster.

--"The Canticle" is an inspiring video from our friends at "The Garage" in Manila. Please write Fr. Ari Dy, SJ, and let him know your reactions to the production.

-- another example of work from the same Philipine production group, "The Garage," is a weekly show, "Sundays for Skeptics." It is innovative in production style and places worship in the foreground and center of the TV program. All the while, it keeps the rhythm of the traditional Mass. For you Catholics, this is really good Catholic TV!

This charming 3-minute tale produced by CORAPE, in Quito, lifted my spirits on this Valentine's day. All you romantics take note and enjoy.
