Dee Dee Halleck has written an excellent and remarkably brief description and analysis of the origins and evolution of indymedia in article that appears in the current issue of Media Development. The essay is "Indymedia: Building an international activist internet network."

I am convinced that, although largely unrecognized, WACC is prophetic in seeing and promoting the connections between independent media activism and Christian faith communities.

Mary points to a punchy animation about the "Terrifying Gay Agenda." Very nice.

Last night during the Lehrer News Hour, Lutheran Pastor Heidi Neumark talked about her book, "Breathing Space: A Spiritual Journey in the South Bronx." Neumark is the pastor of the Transfiguration Lutheran Church in the South Bronx, where the congregation is a mixture of Hispanics and African Americans in one of the poorest communities in the city. In that neighborhood, the state-of-the-art, expensive jail for young boys towers over the crumbling, dilapidated school across the street.
She writes, “I have learned that grace cleaves to the depths, attends the losses and there slowly works her defiant transfiguration.”

I must read this book.

I find it helpful to try to understand and keep abreast of movements and ideas with which I disagree. This essay by Douglas Spotted Eagle outlines the parameters of current copyright law and includes comments regarding churches and schools. If one were bounded by the way this essay recommends compliance of the copyright law in the US, churches and schools would definitely have lost not only their voice, but their ability to act as a leaven in society.

The Olive Garden features Gallo wines—including Gallo of Sonoma—as “wine partners” at its restaurants throughout the United States and Canada. In its television ads, this huge corporate chain says “when you’re here, you’re family.” Tell Olive Garden executives that their wine partner, Gallo of Sonoma, doesn’t reflect this motto. Matt and Gina Gallo continue to exploit more than 75% of their vineyard workers by refusing to provide health coverage.

Let the Olive Garden know you have pledged to boycott Gallo wines unless Matt and Gina Gallo and Gallo of Sonoma stop denying basic health coverage to the 75% of their workers supplied by farm labor contractors. The taste, quality and tradition of Gallo of Sonoma wines flow from the people who grow the vines. All Gallo of Sonoma farm workers deserve health benefits through their United Farm Workers contract.

Please e-mail company executives today. Ask them whether the Olive Garden wants to be linked with Gallo of Sonoma’s unscrupulous behavior that contradicts the Olive Garden’s message of “when you’re here, you’re family.” Tell the Olive Garden it should take the responsible stand and urge Gallo of Sonoma to settle with the farm workers.
