Democracy Now

am back, but will probably be absent more than present here for the rest of the year.
Just to say that I was inspired yesterday, listening to "Democracy Now" with Amy Goodman. But more on that some other time.
Today on our community radio station, KPFT, I was again treated to beaming optimism during a discussion of Senator Margaret Chase Smith's "Declaration of Conscience." Her 15-minute speech
should help a lot of young people today interpret the scowls of "anti-patriotism" that come from Ashcroft and other government officials with narrow views of freedom.

Satellite Talk Show

One of the highlights of the North South Radio Dialog was a one-hour talk show about the world summit on the information society and its relevance to local communities. Using its network satellite, ALER connected panelists from four countries: The Netherlands, Argentina, Ecuador and Bolivia. This demonstration revealed the power of listening to grassroots people speak for themselves about media issues as these affect schools, employment options and health. Plans are for ALER to do this in conjunction with radio stations in the US, starting this April.

Latina/o Digital Radio

Yesterday I visited Ximana Chala, one of the inspiring leaders within the Centro Cultural Afroecuatoriano. She is working on a new video about the afroecuadorian legacy in the tourist areas of Ecuador, unveiling many surprises about the African history in Ecuador. If you click on "videos" on the website, you'll find that they offer videos on many interesting topics that you may wish to order. They have some "video clips" that might be useful for small group reflections. They do ship to the United States.

During this seminar, "North-South Radio Dialog," we've discussed the digital radio developments that sound hopeful for radios to operate a second channel, thus allowing for new voices in the US. One of the seminar participants, Fred Flaxman, Director of Development at WEXH, says that his station, WEXL, Florida will begin the digital converson this year. The second channel could be for spanish and other voices???!!! Since we are being hosted by ALER which could easily host a 24-7 service. A the participants are enthused that ideas and collaborations born here may eventually blossom. Latin American stations represented are from Peru, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador and Costa Rica. As I mentioned, also present are staff from NPR, PRI and NFCB. This is a wonderful week. More tomorrow.

NPR, PRI, National Federation of Community Broadcasters, Radio Bilingue, and public station reps are here from the US, as are radio directors and satellite programmers from various Latin American countries. Disability Radio and Faith

Funny how God reveals. Listening to my favorite station, KPFT community radio, while on my way to tennis last week, I heard an interview with Linda Montgomery who talked about her life path change. She was a nature photographer and became blind. There was something in the way that she spoke about feeling "the divine within us," she spoke with complete understanding, clarity and assurance. She opened up new meanings of my life, and echoes of inner God experiences stirred within me. I had forgotten some of those energizing and all-important experiences. If you can tune in to the series, Disability Radio WorldWide Programming you'll enjoy it. It is hosted by disabilities activist Jean Parker and produced in Costa Rica. I highly recommend the program. Pacifica distribures the weekly series and you can also tune in by short wave.

Radio Huaya

This is the final day of taping Mexico City and this afternoon we go to Lima, Peru. Learned about a radio station in the Indigenous communities of Otomi, Nahuatl and Kepehua that has been operating for 35 years. The story of the radio having become integrated as a social, cultural sytem, or organ, of the community begs for research. If you are a scholar, this is where your service is needed, for it is a goldmine of a model, I think, for what human-based communications systems can do and be.

Radio Huayacocotla (Radio "Huaya") operates on short frequency 2390 kh.
Community residents use it as a backbone for airing issues, celebrating community events and staying in touch with each other.

The New York Link
The radio station serves as the telephone system of the community with New York City. Although the Otomi had not migrated before, about five years ago the food shortage and economic deprivation became so great that young men began to migrate to New York City to work, then return home and sustain their families. Radio Huaya is the way that the young men in the Bronx and in Queens call their families. They place a call to the radio station and leave a detailed message for their family. Then the radio station broadcasts the message to the community.

9/11 Conversation
Otomi who were in New York used this system to call Radio Huaya and tell their families that they were alive. One of the callers also said "The Americans now are frightened, they are for the first time frightened. Pray for them."

Radio Huaya does not have a website. For more info write to Harriet Paterson, a journalist who is collaborating with the radio.
